Important update on RBA surcharging changes

Scheduled for Oct 1, 00:00 - 00:01 AEST

Update

Dear valued customer,

On 31 March 2026, the Reserve Bank of Australia published its final conclusions on the Review of Merchant Card Payment Costs and Surcharging. We want to ensure you are informed of the change most relevant to your business.

What is changing:
From 1 October 2026, businesses will no longer be able to add surcharges to Visa, Mastercard or eftpos card payments for customers. American Express, JCB and UnionPay have aligned with these reforms and will remove surcharging from the same date.
Under the new rules, the RBA has also lowered the maximum “interchange” fees that the card schemes can set for card payment services. From 1 April 2027, a cap on foreign-issued card interchange fees will also be introduced.

What DataMesh is doing:
DataMesh will take action to remove surcharges for the applicable schemes on the evening of September 30. No action is required from you.

Dear valued customer,

On 31 March 2026, the Reserve Bank of Australia published its final conclusions on the Review of Merchant Card Payment Costs and Surcharging. We want to ensure you are informed of the change most relevant to your business.

What is changing:
From 1 October 2026, surcharging on Visa, Mastercard and EFTPOS card payments will be prohibited. This covers debit, prepaid and credit cards . Businesses will no longer be permitted to recover card acceptance costs through a surcharge at the point of payment; these costs will need to be absorbed or reflected in advertised pricing

What is not changing right now:
This reform does not currently apply to other cards however the RBA has announced a separate public consultation commencing mid-2026 that will consider three-party card networks, including Amex. No changes to American Express surcharging are confirmed at this stage.

What DataMesh Group is doing:
We are reviewing all changes required to comply with the RBA's new framework and are working to ensure a smooth transition ahead of the October 2026 deadline. DataMesh will take action to remove surcharges for the applicable schemes on the evening of September 30. No action is required from you.
